Backhoe Dredger

Backhoe Dredger

Backhoe dredgers (BHD) are mechanical dredgers and best suited for shallow areas with little opportunity for manoeuvring. The operating draft of a BHD or its barges is usually much less than that of a CSD or a TSHD. The nature of the material to be dredged dictates the suitability of using BHDs. Typically BHDs is suited for loose materials and weak rock. Material dredged by BHD is placed into split hopper barges (SHB) for transport to the spoil ground.

The advantage of BHDs is that in situ material is kept intact reducing the amount of fines released into the surrounding water column. However, the production rates of BHDs are typically much lower than those of CSDs and TSHDs.
